LITERACY
Every day we continue to do our Alphabet Chant to learn the names and sound(s) of the letters of the alphabet. Since returning from our Holiday Break we have done a Letter A Day. To learn about the Letter of the Day we write it on the white board saying a phrase to help us remember how to write it (ex. Pull down, slant down, slant up). We have practiced each letter by tracing and writing them independently on a sheet of paper. To help us remember where to start writing on our paper we sing a little song, "Top to bottom, left to right, left to right. Top to bottom, left to right, that's how we read and write."

The letters we have covered thus far include:
January 6-9th
Review: Tt & Ii (introduced just before Holiday Break)
Learn: Ll, Ff, Ee

January 13-16th
Review letters from last week
Learn: Hh, Xx, Vv, Ww

January 20-23rd
Review letters from last two weeks
Learn: Nn, Mm, Zz, Aa

We were able to read with our book buddies again on Tuesday, January 14th.

MATH
We have been practicing very hard on identifying, writing, and counting out numbers 0-10. We have learned how to use counters to fill in a ten-frame to represent a number. Using ten-frames also helps with subitizing, which is being able to see and identify a number instantly. We have used a deck of cards and number chips to match alike numbers or count out the correct number of counters to match the number on the card or chip.
To help us learn how to correctly write letters we have been using worksheets to trace the numbers. I had the students write each number independently on a piece of white paper in designated box. To do this they had to follow directions using the words "next to," "underneath," or "below" to know which number to write and which box to write it into.

TESTING
PALs testing was completed over the last two weeks. I had the kids identify letters, numbers, and parts of a sentence that was read to them. They also had to tell me letter sounds, match beginning sounds of pictures (ex. Milk to Mouse-->both start with the /m/ sound), and then reproduce the first (beginning) sound of a picture after the item in the picture was said to them (ex. Bird, teacher says bird and student has to reproduce the /b/ sound for bird).

OUTSIDE TIME
We finally made it back outside for recess on Thursday. It was a wonderful, snow-filled time! With the fresh snow we played on the big snow hill, ran in the snowy field, and made snow angels.
