Monday Check In

Good Morning 4K Friends & Families!

How was everyone's Spring Break? It was wonderful to be able to talk with some of you and hear your stories on the phone!

Did everyone receive the At Home Activities for Days 13-22? I sent the instructions in an email and I shared a folder with all the papers needed in a Google Drive Folder. Please either comment or email me a "Yes" or "No" response so I know you have received both of these. I know everyone is at different places in the first packet, but I want to make sure everyone received the second packet.

Updates on what our friends are doing at home.

Hunter S. was playing outside and celebrating his sister Molly's birthday.

Lachlyn did the Lucky Charm Graphing Activity with her brother Landon.

Max told me that he and his sister Kinley did the Lucky Charm Graphing Activity too, but instead of counting the marshmallows, Max preferred to eat them. 🤣 Max's mom said that he and Kinley weren't feeling very well so we send them well wishes and hope they are feeling better now. Max's older sister Maddy had to trade in her walking boot for a hard cast and crutches; send well wishes to her so her foot heals quickly!

Lexie has been working hard on the activities that were sent home as well. She enjoyed doing the Lucky Charm Graphing Activity too. Here is what she said about it,"It was fun guessing and eating the marshmallows!" Lexie and her sisters and Mom made monster faces for creative time. (If I get a picture, I'll post it on here so we can all see their awesome creations!)

Gavin has been super busy at home with his family! He has been working hard on letters, doing work with numbers, and playing outside ALOT! Gavin told me that he was doing an Easter Egg Hunt with his brothers the other day in his backyard! (If any of you have done Easter Egg Hunts, send me pictures and I'll post them on here!).
Did anyone get Gavin's video? His Mom said he created one for all of his friends to see; she sent it through email.

Fun Science Experiment
Visiting the neighbors goats!
Ryelynn has been doing many activities from the packet that was sent home. She works along side of Mom when Mom is working. She created the colorful caterpillar project and I think was starting on the blue bird project the other day. Ryelynn was having gym class inside and it looked like she was jumping on a small trampoline or making her own dance routine. Ryelynn has also already watched the finger-spelling video of all of your names and got her name correct and a couple other friends'  names too! 😀

If you would like to see your smiling face on our class blog send Miss Peters pictures and stories of what you have been up to! I really enjoying hearing the stories and seeing the pictures and videos everyone has been sending; I'm sure your friends would love to see them too!

*Can you see these pictures? Please leave a comment or send me an email so I know, that would be awesome!*

Enjoy the sunshine today friends! Miss Peters misses you all very much and can't wait to see you again!

Finger-spelling Challenge!

Hi 4K Friends!
I tried creating a video for you today (it's a little dark, so I'll keep working on that for next time to hopefully get better lighting). I want you to write in a comment below or respond in an email with which number your name was finger-spelled on. Ex. If your name was fingered spelled on question number 3, you would respond with your name was number 3. If you recognize any of your friends names you can write those in too!
Have fun with this little "challenge"!

Dog Trainers/Dog Sports Miss Andrea & Miss Sarah 3/13/2020

Miss Andrea and Miss Sarah brought their dogs to school to talk about therapy dogs and dog sports. Miss Andrea's dogs are therapy dogs, but do participate in some of the dog sports. Miss Sarah's dogs participate in the dog sports. Miss Andrea showed us a slideshow of some of the sports the dogs do that we can't do in a classroom, such as an agility course (jumping over poles and through hoops), dock jumping where the dog runs fast and jumps off a dock into water to retrieve one of their favorite toys, and showing of the dog in front of judges. After the slide show Miss Andrea and Miss Sarah did some awesome tricks with their dogs for us (and a couple of the students got to help!).

Smelling around the room for a sent.

Stepping onto a "platform" with both front paws.

Stepping into a box with all four paws.

Medium Box

Little Box

Stepping onto a "spot" or ball with all four paws at a time.

Nose touch a ball

Standing on hind legs and holding my toy.

Standing on hind legs, squeaking my toy, and shaking my toy.

Walking backwards, spinning around, and end standing between Mom's legs.

Jumping onto Mom's back.

Sitting nicely and looking cute on the ground.

Jumping "bump" off Mom.

Holding onto a pole.

Balancing on Mom's feet.

Jumping over 4K friends and a pole.

So many treats for being "good boys" and "good girls"

Hygienist Mrs. Peters 3/13/2020

Mrs. Peters talked with the 4Kers about what she does as a hygienist; She cleans teeth, checks them to make sure there are no cavities in any of your teeth, she flosses teeth, and she takes X-rays (pictures) of people's teeth. Mrs. Peters brought in a couple paper copies of X-rays for us to see and a fake tooth that was healthy on one side and had a big cavity on the other side. After Mrs. Peters talked about her job a couple of the students got to be "teeth" or hygienists for a demonstration to properly clean your teeth, which means you have to brush the front side, the tongue side, and the top of your teeth. It also means you have to floss in between all of your teeth and the back sides of your last teeth (the ones WAAAY in the back of your mouth). When our teeth cleaning demonstration was done Mrs. Peters brought a glow-in-the-dark sticker and a toothbrush for everyone to bring home and use!

Showing what a child sized toothbrush looks like.

Construction Worker Mr. Peters 3/13/2020

🔩 🔨📏 Mr. Peters talked about his job as a construction/remodeling worker. His focus is on installing dry wall and making sure walls are made correctly. He also does windows and doors with his work partner. Since his specialty is walls, Mr. Peters brought in a wall and showed the class what a wall looks like before it is finished and up in our house, and he let all the kids mud the seam of the wall to finish it. We did talk about how the wall isn't completely finished because we would have to go back two more times with the mud on the seam, then paint the wall a color we like before it would be completely finished. The kids had a blast "playing" with mud to finish a wall. 📏🔨 🔩

Chief Joe Hofacker & Fireman Steven Brincks-Town of Center Fire Department 3/12/2020

Chief Hofacker and Fireman Brincks from the Town of Center Fire Department came to school to talk about what firefighters do in our community. When asked the question of who to call if there is a fire, all of the 4Kers knew it was 9-1-1! Chief Hofacker talked about the fire suites all the firefighters have to wear to go into a fire while Fireman Brincks put on the uniform. An interesting fact we learned is the firefighters can only wear their uniform for eight years before it is no longer safe for them to wear. When the kids were asked if they could keep a uniform that is their age, they said yes because they are only 4 or 5, but some of their siblings would have to get a new uniform because they are 8 or 9, or older. Before the firemen left they gave each student a Fireman hat to keep.

Thank you very much for visiting our class!

Silvia-Dog Trainer 3/12/2020

🐾 Silvia is a Dog Trainer who showed us how we train dogs by using a "clicker" and treats. Declan "Dekkie" visited our class for a little while to help Silvia show some tricks. Silvia also asked for a couple of the 4K friends to help demonstrate so they could try and see how commands and treats (stickers) will reinforce good behavior. 🐾
Sitting Nicely

Spin Trick

Buddha Trick

Laying Down and getting yummy liver treats

Gavin "sit." He sat nicely and got a sticker.

Lachlyn lifted her elbow nicely, so she got a sticker. Silvia was working on building up a full trick with Lachlyn. The full trick was to "bump" elbows.

Ryan "bring it." Ryan brought the item he wasn't supposed to touch to Silvia and got a sticker after he put the toy down.

Jaxton "leave it." Jaxton left the toy he wasn't supposed to touch, and came to his 'owner' when called. He was given a sticker for his good behavior.

Alex "bring it." Alex "drop it." Alex brought and dropped the toy when asked; he got a sticker.

🐾 Thank you again for visiting our class! 🐾

Mrs. Van Camp-the Nurse 3/5/2020

Mrs. Van Camp came to school to talk about nursing and how she teaches students to become nurses. After reading and discussing a nursing book she let the kids try some of her nursing tools. They had so much fun listening to their hearts beat or their stomachs 'gurgle.'

Mrs. Van Camp let all the kids pump the blood pressure cuff.

Listening to our hearts or bellies

Nurse, Mrs. Van Camp is better known as Mom to Lexie 😊

Thank you again for visiting our class!

Deputy Sheriff Brian Peters, Sheriff Randy Southard, and K9 Officer Nero-2/24/2020

These three awesome officers from the Outagamie County Sheriffs Department came to our class to tell us about what they do. Deputy Sheriff Peters and Sheriff Southard go out into the community to help keep us safe. Deputy Sheriff Peters sometimes has to wear a SWAT vest and helmet to keep him safe from some of the bad people in our community (he let all of the kids try his vest and helmet on). K9 officer Nero joins Sheriff Southard to help smell drugs, which are bad for us. Nero sniffs out the drugs to warn the sheriffs so they can take precautions of collecting the drugs safely and removing them from our community.

Sheriff Southard talks about his and Nero's jobs.

Deputy Sheriff Peters talks about his job.

Nero takes a picture with our 4K class.

Deputy Sheriff Peters is well known as Uncle Brian to Gavin. 😊

Thank you so much for visiting our classroom!

Pet Entertainment!

Dear 4K Friends!

With all the extra time at home I get to spend more time with my cat April Skye. She is almost 3 years old! She loves to play and entertain herself if no one wants to play or is unable to play because they are busy working on something. I thought it would be fun to post pictures or videos, or stories of our pets. If you have a pet please share in the comments section or through email any fun stories, pictures, or videos.

April was helping me grade the 3rd graders Math Graphs the other day.

She loves to bask in the sun. She found a very sunny spot on the futon in the sun room.

Stay healthy and enjoy the family time! Continue to send me pictures and stories of what you are all doing at home with your families! I miss you all!

3/19/2020 Check In

Hello everyone!

How are everyone's days today? Despite the rain mine has been alright. My cat, April Skye, is really enjoying the extra time with me!

I have a fun "challenge" I would like you and your families to try. If you can do it similar to the video that is fine, but if you don't live near streets make it up! This is just for fun and to fill in extra time you have. Please send me a video of it after you have tried it so I can see what you came up with; if possible I'll try to share the videos with the class for everyone to see.

March 18th Check In

Hello 4K Friends & Families!

It is definitely different not being at school to see all of your wonderful faces and enjoy the time we usually spend together in the morning! How have the first two days of not being at school gone? Have you started any of the activities in the " Go Pack" that went home on Monday? Please comment in the comments section or email me how everything has been going so far. I have already had a couple people send me pictures of them; once I get a few more I will post them on here so everyone can see what their friends are up to.

I will also work on getting pictures up of the wonderful guest speakers we had last week!

LUNCH DOODLES with Mo Willems!

Dear 4K Families,

If you haven't heard Mo Willems is offering free videos on YouTube or at the Kennedy Center:
He will do each Doodle video at 1pm Eastern Time (12pm Central Time). You can watch the video, doodle with Mo Willems, and print off the activity page for each video to practice drawing his book characters.

Enjoy Doodling! Remember to send Miss Peters a picture of your Doodle (and other fun things you have been doing at home).

4K At Home Information

Dear 4K Families,

On Monday we sent home a "Go Pack" with your child; if they were absent, it is in the school office for pick up. There are twelve (12) days worth of activities. Take your time to complete them and enjoy the extra family time. If you have any questions about the pack do not hesitate to contact me.

Today the 4K team and I put together two extra art projects (colorful caterpillar and a blue bird) for you to do during your time at home. All St. Edward School 4K students can pick up the two projects from North Greenville Elementary School because their office hours are longer than St. Ed's. If you would like to read a book about a caterpillar, such as The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle before doing the project it will add extra fun to the project. You could find a book about birds or a blue bird as well before completing the bird project.

I will post on my school blog and/or send an email every other day to everyday during our time away from school to check in. I would love to hear how the activities are going as well as what other fun activities you are doing. Please comment on the blog, respond to an email, and/or send pictures of what you have been doing at home to me; I will also make a post of the fun activities everyone is doing at home so the kids can see what their friends are up to.

Next week, March 23-27th is our Spring Break. This week you do not have to complete any activities or check the blog or email unless you would like to.

As updates come in from HASD and/or Mrs. Cowart I will email or post the information for you to read.

*Over the week I'll continue to add pictures from all of our amazing Guest Speakers for our Community Helpers Unit.*

February 17-20, 24-27

The letters of the alphabet we practiced these two weeks by tracing, writing, and saying their name and sounds include: Bb, Rr, Ss, Uu, & Jj.

The kids practiced working on identifying beginning sounds of words with and played Rhyming Bingo during small groups.
When doing calendar every morning I will ask the students to identify what sound they hear in the days of the week (ex. What sound do you hear in Monday? They have to say the sound for "M" /m/. )

The week of February 17th we had a snow day and the following week we were able to read with our 1st Grade Book Buddies! The last 5 minutes our book buddies let us work with their Math Bin tools again!

We practiced numbers in many ways in small groups with Mrs. Sandy or Mrs. Romnek when Mrs. Sandy was on vacation.
To help us learn and identify the names of numbers 0-10 the students used counters to count out the amount for the number picked, use counters & crayons to fill in a ten-frame after picking a number card, and they learned how to play Go Fish! The face cards were even included so they could practice the letter names.

Social Studies
Feb. 24 we started our Community Helpers Unit. We read a book and discuss the community helper we read about to learn about their job. We discuss what the job is, what the community helper's job title is (Veterinarian, Police Officer, Teacher, Nurse, etc.), what their uniform is, and what tools they need and use for their job. We will try to have as many special guests to come in and talk about their job to hear personal experience stories.
On Monday, February 24th we had three special guests visit our classroom. Deputy Sheriff Brian Peters, Deputy Randy Southard and K9 officer Nero from the Outagamie County Sheriff's Department came to talk to us about what they do to help keep us safe. Deputy Sheriff Peters talked about his job and showed us his SWAT vest and helmet; he even let the kids try them on. Deputy Southard told us about how Nero helps him find drugs, which are not good for us, to help keep our city clean. He also had K9 Nero follow some commands-sit and stay- in German. Deputy Southard & K9 Nero showed us how Nero likes to play with his fun toy. Mrs. Cowart held the toy very tight, Deputy Southard gave Nero a command and he leaped forward to grab the toy from Mrs. Cowart.
*All pictures from today will be in a separate post.*

Social Emotional Skills (StepTwo Program)
We have been working a lot on calming breaths in our StepTwo Program. Sometimes our puppet friends Jackson and Belle will visit to help us remember and learn new calming breaths. The names of our calming breaths include belly breathing, the STAR, the Drain, and the Pretzel. Next week we will learn how to do and use the Balloon breathing breath.
